June 2022

Women’s freedom to choose — their jobs, names, lifestyles, and health care — have been hard-won in this country. We’re not giving them up.

Updated on June 24, 2022.

In the 1992 case of Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey, the US Supreme Court famously affirmed that “[t]he ability of women to participate equally in the economic and social life of the Nation has been facilitated by their ability to control their reproductive lives.”

In other words, for women and others who experience pregnancy, our basic freedoms hinge on our ability to control our reproductive health. Our physical and psychological wellbeing, financial resources, capacity to gain and maintain employment, and even our ability to eat certain foods are all dependent on our reproductive choices.

Secretary of State Griswold and Former Secretary Williams Send Bipartisan
Message to Remind Voters to Be Aware of Election Disinformation

Denver, Colo – Coloradans across the state will see reminders online from Secretary of State Jena Griswold and former Republican Secretary of State Wayne Williams to be aware of election disinformation ahead of the 2022 State Primary Election.

As part of the Secretary of State’s ongoing efforts to address election disinformation, this bipartisan outreach initiative will educate voters on the issue and remind them to use trusted sources for accurate election information.

“Disinformation is one of the most significant threats to our elections because it strikes right at the heart of voter confidence. It is critical we counter the disinformation with good information,” said Secretary Griswold. “That’s why we are launching this initiative to remind Coloradans that our elections are free, fair and secure and to remember to use trusted sources for information.”

The Federal Government continues to warn that, “as the U.S. 2022 mid-term elections approach, malign foreign actors could bolster their messaging to sow discord and influence U.S. audiences in keeping with practices during previous election cycles.” Bad actors may try to undermine confidence in election results by spreading disinformation on fake websites, altering existing legitimate websites, sending fraudulent emails, releasing articles in fake online journals disseminating false narratives through social media accounts and more.

Academic studies and U.S. allies’ experiences indicate that mitigating disinformation requires ensuring citizens are aware of the threat, think critically about the information they see on online and on social media, and know where to find reliable information.

LWVCO Leader Spotlight
Meet Karen Sheek...
We are excited to highlight League members in our emails each week! Our hope is to introduce your fellow community members and put faces on the names you often see.

Karen Sheek's term as Board President ends on Thursday. To say that her leadership has been paramount under extraordinary conditions would be an understatement. A wife, mother, educator, board member, council member, and former mayor, Karen has been a civil servant since she moved to Colorado.

"Karen stepped up to the plate as President in June of 2020, during the height of the pandemic and the accompanying civil unrest. She has led the Colorado League for the past two years with strength and grace. It has been a pleasure to serve with and learn from Karen. I'm so grateful she is remaining on the Board to continue to offer support to Colorado's 18 Leagues." -Beth Hendrix, Executive Director

As Karen moves into her Board role as Local League Support, please be sure to thank her for her service to LWVCO!
