LWVCO's Programming Includes:
  • Direct lobbying at the Colorado Capitol by trained volunteers, including drafting and amending bills, providing testimony, and promoting grassroots advocacy. LWVCO lobbies for equitable and transparent systems, comprehensive healthcare, affordable housing, high-quality public education, environmental action and justice, gun violence prevention, reproductive freedom, and more – necessary components to make our democracy healthy and work for all.
  • Unbiased public education on current and pending legislation, resources, and solutions through bilingual written materials, virtual and in-person presentations, online access including social media, and media partnerships. We fight mis/dis/mal-information through the distribution of accurate information as a direct rebuttal, and education on media literacy and critical thinking skills, as well as encouraging civil and respectful behavior.
  • Providing a platform for advocacy, education, and engagement to the voting public, decreasing isolation and the sense of helplessness so many feel. Each chapter has opportunities for engagement including voter registration activities, creating and coordinating educational presentations, and lobbying for local and regional change. All are welcome.
  • Observer Corps: A governmental watchdog program that sends trained volunteers to observe the meetings of governmental entities (city councils, school boards, etc.) to ensure compliance with sunshine laws, democratic ideals, and voter intent.
  • Eyewitness: To reduce news deserts which harm citizens’ right to know, we’ve combined Observer Corps with partnership with local newspapers, allowing them to publish Observer reports and therefore allow reporters to cover other topics. Eyewitnesses are highly trained by both LWVCO and the newspaper partner and are paid for each report. This program is established in one chapter currently and is launching in two more in April 2024, in partnership with Colorado Community Media and El Semanario dual-language newspaper. This program increases civic engagement, governmental transparency, people’s right to know, and the earning potential of the Eyewitness.
  • Task Forces: LWVCO’s nine task forces serve as platforms for advocating on issues that directly influence the mental and behavioral health of communities. From Housing and Healthcare to Education and Gun Violence Prevention, these task forces provide opportunities for Coloradans to engage in discussions and advocacy efforts aimed at addressing underlying factors that impact mental wellness. By advocating for policies that address social inequities and promote access to essential services, LWVCO's task forces work towards creating environments that support mental health and resilience.
  • Action Alerts: Through user-friendly software, LWVCO’s Action Alerts empower voters to advocate for policies that promote mental and behavioral health. By engaging with legislators on pressing issues such as gun safety, reproductive justice, and affordable housing, constituents contribute to shaping policies that address systemic challenges and promote well-being. These actions not only amplify voices but also foster a sense of agency and empowerment among individuals, which are vital components of mental wellness.
  • Litigation: When necessary, LWVCO will file suit or support alongside partners to ensure equity and protect basic freedoms including voting rights, access to quality and affordable education, healthcare, housing, nutrition, and basic services.

- In partnership with the NAACP and Mi Familia Vota, LWVCO filed suit against a loosely-organized group known as the US Election Integrity Plan, which was sending volunteers, sometimes openly armed, door-to-door, implying fraudulent ballots were sent from that address. The group appeared to target people of color.  Because voter intimidation is voter suppression, we go to trial in July 2024.

- We filed an amicus brief in support of Colorado Open Meetings Law in a case regarding the Woodland Park School Board.

- Our Pikes Peak Chapter, in partnership with NAACP and the Citizen’s Project, filed suit against the City of Colorado Springs to move municipal elections from spring to November. This is an issue of equity and equal voice, as there is a 40% decrease in voting by BIPOC communities during spring elections.

  • Highlighting the work of diverse partners through educational events and platforms, LWVCO showcases the work of partners including: The Lab to Combat Human Trafficking, Colorado Social Legislation Coalition, New Era, Colorado Ceasefire, Disability Law Colorado, and more through weekly e-newsletters sent to 8,000 people, as well as social media.
