PRESIDENT'S LETTER

 

Greetings League Members,

 
In alignment with LWVCO’s Strategic Plan to be more proactive, the Board voted this month to take positions on Citizen Initiatives once petitions have been approved for distribution rather than waiting to see which ones make the ballot. One petition has garnered enough signatures to appear on this fall’s ballot: #31 State Income Tax Rate Reduction. The Board and Legislative Action Committee oppose this ballot issue.
 
NOTES FROM THE 4.19.2022 LWVCO BOARD MEETING
 

The Board of Directors for the League of Women Voters of Colorado met virtually on the evening of April 19th.

 

Present: Board President Karen Sheek, Vice President Barbara Whinery, Secretary Irene Tynes, Treasurer Bonnie Seals, Directors at Large Chris Humphries, Lena Brown, Toni Larson, Connie Fox and Beth Malmskog. Also present were Executive Director Beth Hendrix and Operations Manager Laura Baker, who recorded minutes.

 

The consent agenda, including LWVCO 3/15/2022 Board Mtg Minutes, Financials, Advocacy & Action Report, Governance Report, and Local League Support Report was approved unanimously.

The LWVCO Board recently voted to take a position on citizen-initiated petitions, as opposed to waiting for the signature verification process to confirm placement on the ballot.

Observer Corps Toolkit
 

Protecting our right to know is integral to the health of our democracy. Decisions that determine how our schools will be run, at what level community safety programs will be funded, and how land in our towns will be used impact our lives and are vital to our well-being. These kinds of decisions need to be made with public input and oversight. One important way to ensure that is to observe government meetings. The act of observation promotes government transparency and accountability.

 
Here are some tools to help Colorado Leagues create an Observer Corps. These documents are also available in LWVCO's Document Library; to access, please log in and go to the Members tab - Documents - Advocacy Resources - Toolkits.
 
 
 
 
There's still time to honor the Modern Suffragist in your life! 
 
Donate to our Modern Suffragist campaign before Tuesday, May 3rd to ensure that your honoree receives a certificate declaring her a Modern Suffragist and LWVCO baseball hat by Mother's Day, May 8th. 
 
Visit the donations page on the LWVCO website and select the Modern Suffragist option. Please be sure to enter the mailing address of your honoree in the comment box. Thank you!
 
 
 

LWVCO PROJECT GRANTS

 

Do you have something in mind for your local League that will also help serve our overall program, education and outreach goals? Apply for a Project Grant!

 

These grants are awarded on a rolling basis with no deadline, with a quick turn-around of about 30 days. Your application must be approved by your local League's Board before you submit it for state League consideration. Each local League is eligible for a maximum of $500 per fiscal year. Recipients are also required to provide an Outcomes Report within one year of being awarded any grant funds.
