ACTION ALERT! SUPPORT HB21-1103
MEDIA LITERACY IMPLEMENTATION
Sponsors: Reps. Cutter and McLachlan & Sens. Pettersen and Coram
This bi-partisan bill requires the Colorado Department of Education to create and maintain an online resource bank of materials and resources pertaining to media literacy, provide technical assistance on implementing policies and procedures, best practices, and recommendations related to media literacy, and to review and adopt revisions that implement media literacy within reading, writing, and civics standards in our schools. These materials are not a curriculum, are optional for teachers to use, and are not required.
The League supports this bill because we believe the Colorado Department of Education should take a strong leadership role that encourages educational improvement. The League also believes that democratic government depends upon informed and active participation at all levels of government. Gaining media literacy skills and strategies in school will contribute to a more informed citizenry for the future.
This bill was passed by the Colorado House and by the Senate Education Committee. It was scheduled for its 2nd Reading on the Senate Floor on April 29 but the Senate decided to lay over the bill to tomorrow’s session. This layover gives all of us a chance to make a final push to get this bill passed by asking our Senators to vote “Yes” on the bill.
