See Something, Say Something

We have the opportunity to participate in a nationwide program to report election misinformation.

SQUINTers download an app and, when they see electoral misinformation, they use an app to take a screenshot of the offending page, type in some information about why they think the information is fishy, and send it in for analysis.  A report returns to local election authorities — in our case, to LWVCO who sends it on to the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office.

When you sign up, you will be invited to an online training session and get instructions for downloading an app to your phone and to your computer.  Then, when you’re looking at FaceBook or Twitter or SnapChat or anywhere online, you are ready to identify misinformation and report it in a way that allows officials to do something.

Sign up by Tuesday, 15 September 2020.  We will send the application to MITRE SQUINT and get everyone ready to report misinformation.  This electoral season, we have been warned that misinformation and disinformation will be rife.

Let's help our election security officials track and counter bad information.

Click the links below to view the SQUINTSTAGRAMs we have received.  They are examples of the kind of analysis and reporting that the SQUINT project is doing.  As reports and communications from MITRE SQUINT come into LWVCO, they will be posted in the LWVCO Document Library and forwarded to the Election Security team at the Colorado Secretary of State's Office.

Background

Gerry Cummins, LWVCO Director of Voter Services, was contacted by MITRE and the LWV Alexandria VA to participate in the SQUINT program.  After speaking with the program director at MITRE, we asked the LWVCO Board to approve our participation on 9 July.  An enrollment form was posted online, and by 31 July we had our first slate of volunteers.

We will be working with the electoral security team at the Secretary of State's Office.  When we SQUINTers report incorrect or misleading election information on social media, the security specialists at the Colorado Secretary of State's Office will receive a report.  The League will support their efforts to combat misinformation and disinformation.
