The Health Impacts of Climate Change (2021 LWVCO Convention Caucus)

Our Colorado front-line workers know the many risks faced by our communities. They witness, in many of their patients, the effects of Climate Change and the emissions that are the source of the global problem. Join us for a discussion with three dedicated physicians who deal with many health issues that are being created and how we can slow down and stop the malignancies affecting our families.

Our three local experts that will share their knowledge and experience include:

Dr. Jan Douglas M.D. worked as a family physician for 38 years until her retirement in 2018. She graduated from the University of Idaho and received her physician's degree from the University of Washington. She then completed her Internship and Residency at Providence Medical Center of Family Medicine Program in Seattle, Washington. She spent the majority of her career working in clinics caring for low income patients as well as immigrants in Denver and Atlanta. She also was in practice for 9 years at Rose Medical Center in Denver where she served on several committees and was Assistant Chair of the Family Medicine Department. She was a member of the American Academy of Family Practice and the Colorado Academy of Family Practice. She has done Supervisory Teaching  at Emory University and at the University of Colorado. Most recently, she has volunteered at CDPHE and Tri-County Health Department helping with COVID vaccinations and spends most of her volunteer time working on environmental advocacy as co-chair of the Legislative Committee for the Colorado Sierra Club.

Dr. Sheela Manhke M.D is a general pediatrician who focuses on children and health equity at a non-profit called Every Child's Pediatrics, based in Denver. She has a passion in working on environmental health issues, particularly Climate Change, clean air, and environmental equity. In 2016 she returned to school and received her Masters in Biology and Environmental Science studying climate change and health. She is a member of the Colorado Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics Legislative Action Team and part of the newly formed group of Climate Advocates that are working together across the country for local climate action. She is also a Climate Ambassador.

Dr. Hanna Linstadt is the current fellow in Climate Change and Health Science Policy at the University of Colorado Department of Emergency Medicine. She is interested in the connection between climate change and human health, and how the health care system contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. As a fellow, she is currently studying the relationship between climate change and health. She is learning how to use this information to best impact policy.
